When I was 6 years old my mom purchased a piano and taught me how to play. So piano became the first instrument I learned. The next instrument I learned was viola when I joined the Elementary School Orchestra in 4th grade. In 5th grade I switched to the School Band and clarinet became the next instrument I learned. Starting in 9th grade, I began guitar lessons. Soon, I was not only playing but writing my own music. In 10th grade I was one of a select few chosen to join Guardian International Drumming where I learned West African based drumming and drum making. I performed in several concerts with the group, and I also learned how to make my own drum. Thanks to this experience, I was moved to the Percussion Section in my High School Band. During my high school years I learned many more instruments including: drum set, timpani, xylophone, glockenspiel, several other percussion instruments, bass guitar, and mandolin. Also in 10th grade I auditioned for and was accepted as a bass singer in "Choralaires", a prestigious choir at Scotia-Glenville High School, that performed all over the Capital District. In 1993 we won 2nd place at the Nationals Competition in Washington, DC. In 11th grade I joined my mom in the piano teaching business. We taught as a team for the next 10 years. We had upwards of 20 students at our peak. We put on several shows and other events with our students over the years. In 1994 I took a Level 2 Piano Class at Schenectady County Community College. They used Alfred's Adult Book 2, (the same course I teach from). I got an A+ in the class and was affectionately scolded by my Teacher for adding my own little flourishes to several of the songs. At the same time I was taking this class I was also employed by the college as a Tutor for those who needed help with Ear Training. In 2000, I added guitar lessons to my program, and I have continued to teach on my own throughout the years. I currently have a few openings for new guitar and piano/keyboard students. |
